One leaf, 150 farmer, one tea at a time
Every BetelO story begins with a leaf, but it does not end there.
Behind every leaf is a farmer who has grown it, cared for it and depended on a market that has not always been kind to such a delicate crop. When demand falls or the seasons become difficult, as much as 60% of the harvest can go to waste, taking with it not just a crop, but the time, care and livelihood that went into growing it.
Today, we work directly with more than 150 farmers, of whom 60% are women, creating another market for a crop that has long been confined to traditional uses. One leaf becomes one cup, one cup becomes one connection, and one connection becomes part of a larger story that we are building one farmer and one tea at a time.
One leaf, 150 farmer, one tea at a time
It began with a leaf that had always been home. Born and brought up in Mysuru, Sandeep eshanya had grown up around a city where the betel leaf was woven into everyday traditions, rituals and even the royal history of the Mysuru Maharaja Shri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar but it was years later, on an ordinary metro ride to his office in Bengaluru, that he began to see the familiar leaf differently after coming across research on its ancient uses and untapped possibilities.
The thought stayed with him: if this leaf had been valued for centuries, could it find a new home in our everyday lives?
What followed was a year of research, conversations and experimentation, driven by a growing concern around the everyday gut issues many Indians experienced and the dependence on over the counter products for quick relief. Sandeep began exploring whether the betel leaf could become something gentler and more familiar, transforming an ancient ingredient into a thoughtful everyday ritual.
